Amazing Pet Stories

Wahhotts, the Intuitive Rat Terrier
My son was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anemia in 2006. We were able to buy him a puppy when his counts moved up a certain level. So,my son Cody chose a Rat Terrier. He named him Wahhotts. He trained him, loved him, and fed him. When Cody called Wahhotts, the Rat Terrier followed. They would run races – giving Cody 20 seconds head start, and Wahhotts would pass him, spin circles around him, and win every time.  Cody then needed a stem cell transplant which began with aggressive chemotherapy on January 5, 2010.

The first time Cody got to come home was six weeks later. We thought Wahhotts would br over-excited to see Cody. But he wasn’t. In fact, he stayed away from him. He whimpered when he stayed in his room. He hid under Cody’s bed. Cody was heart-broken. But he kept trying with Wahhotts. Cody then went back into the hospital and was gone another two weeks. This time when he came home, Wahhotts was a little more receptive-but not like before. He still continued to whimper, but didn’t hide under the bed. Cody then went back in the hospital for ten weeks. When he came home, Wahhotts wasn’t whimpering, but didn’t begin to Cling to his ‘boy’ like he used to. However, before Cody went back in to the hospital for the last time, Wahhotts and Cody were beginning to be attached at the hip.

Unfortunately,  the next time Cody came home, it was for him to pass on to Heaven. We set up his bed in the living room and did what we needed to do to keep Cody comfortable.  Wahhotts laid next to Cody on the bed. He NEVER left his side. He NEVER left to eat, drink or go outside. He NEVER moved except to give his ‘boy’ loving and warmth. When Cody passed, Wahhotts knew. He refused to leave his side. He cried and wanted to go with him when the funeral director came. Wahhotts became a lost dog for quite sometime.

During the time of reacquaintance, we realized that with the stem cell transplant Cody’s blood type changed. He was B+ and turned A+. Wahhotts sensed this change. That is why he didn’t know his ‘boy’. That is why he acted the way he did. He had to realize in actions, not scent, that this was his ‘boy’. Wahhotts knew Cody was dying. He stayed with him until the end.

Wahhotts now lives with Cody’s sister.  He misses Cody. How do I know? When I visit he run to me. One day when I was holding Wahhotts, I looked at him and said “do you miss your ‘boy’? Wahhotts immediately jumped up, started licking me and wagging his tail. He then jumped down looking for his ‘boy’.

Ratt, the Protector
Ratt lives on the 11th floor of a condo building. One day we heard some noise and Ratt went nuts. When I went to see what she was barking at, there was a window washer on the outside. She went into complete protect mode. We went back into the office where I was working and she planted herself in full alert on the bench next to my chair. She didn’t move for a very long time until she decided sitting next to me wasn’t enough.  She then planted herself on my lap in full alert.  This lasted for two days until she determined the threat was gone.

Nima, the One-Eyed Diva
Nima is a cat that was rescued by FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) last year. When FOCAS discovered Nima and her 2 other sisters, they were only two weeks old and living in a landfill. Nima had developed a bacterial infection on one of her eyes that was so bad that it had to be removed. That hasn’t stopped Nima one bit from living life to the fullest! Nima has now found a forever home and is very happy there. Her favorite activities include drinking water from the faucet, playing with anything that moves, and sneak attacking her best cat friend, Bosco.
